By Doris Daugherty Buying Sweaters...Every wo. man can be a sweater girl these days, says Miss Margaret Groseclose.. and there are many styles and fibers to choose from. Sweaters are being made from natural fibers, synthetic fibers or blends. The Virginia Polytechnic Institute clothing specialist says if you select a sweater made of a natural fiber it probably will be 100 percent wool which is a strong, durable fiber, usually light-weight, soft, and very absorbent. Such sweaters should be laundered carefully by hand, following the manufacturer's Instructions. Fashion designers are using many speciality fibers and one of the most popular is mohair.. often combined with virgin wool. Mohair is a soft, lustruous, and delicate fiber. Angora is a soft, slippery, fragil fiber that is usually combined with another strong fiber. Cashmere, also a speciality fiber, is a soft, delicate, expensive fiber which may be combined with some other fiber or used alone. For care of speciality fibers, check the label and follow the manufacturer's directions, suggests the home economist. Synthetic fibers are becoming more and more popular for sweaters. They fall into two
?;roups...nylon and acrylic ibers. Nylon is a strong, elastic, flat fiber with no hair. It does not pill or crush, and does not absorb moisture. Nylon is often used with natural fibers to add strength. The acrylic fibers such as or Ion, acrilan, and creslon are strong and lightweight. They have good bulking properties, but do have a tendency to pill. Sweaters of nylon and acrylic fibers frequently can be machine-w a s h e d and dried. Check the label for the markers* recommendations. Some acrylics must be machinedried.
Careful laundering of sweaters is essential. Wool sweaters suffer with sudden water temperature changes^or with) rough handling. Once this happens, it is Impossible to bring back the original shape. The thpread, buttons, and other trim, as well as the fabric, should be fast to washing. Sweaters should be aired after each wearing, folded neatly and stored in a drawer. Homemaking Hints
