Apples are one of the largest agricultural crops in Virginia. In Rappahannock County an estimated near million bus-« hels of fruit were harvested last year, probably the largest crop in its history. This year the estimate stands about 250 thousand bushels. While this is a light crop for Rappahannock, as is the case all over the state, the national crop will be very heavy. Local apples are of excellent quality, say orchardists, and of a good size in spite of two consecutive years of drought. Apples and beef cattle are the major crops in Rappahannock and are vital to the economy of the county. The week of October 16-24 has been proclaimed Apple Week in the state. With a growing market for fresh fruit, facilities for pack ing and storing in this area have grown also. There are two large cold storages and packing plants, plus a juice plant, plus many privately own ed packing houses. Dies in Collision
Mrs. Mildred Green Sandridge, 39, of Elk ton, Va. was fatally injured in a single vehicle collision near Elkton last Wednesday night. The accident occurred on Route 340. The 1956 Chevrolet station wagon she was driving went off the right of the highway, struck a .utility, pole,- shearing it off, then crashed head on into a tree. Mrs. Sandridge was pinned in the wreckage and rescue squadsmen worked thirty minutes to free her. She was the former Mildred Green of Amissville, daughter of Mrs. C. M. M. Jpreen and the late Mr. Green.
