Everyone is familiar with die aphorism, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness." Bat how many know to whom the saying is to be credited? With the inclusion of "indeed" following "Cleanliness,” the expression was first used in a sermon "On Dress" by John Wesley, co-founder with his brother, Charles, of the Methodist Church.
Another sometimes-quoted saying of John Wesley, from his "Rules of Conduct," is: "Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can." Quite a man he turned out to be, this John Wesley, born JOne 17, 1703, the fifteenth of nineteenth children of the Rev. Samuel and Susanna Wesley of Epworth, England.
