The highest monthly travel in the history of Shenandoah National Park was recorded in August with 425,100 visits according to figures released today by Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins. Mr. Hoskins said tne August travel exceeded by more than 10,000 the previous all-time mark set in October of last year during the annual fall color show in the Park. The Central section of the Park had the greatest number of visits with 159,300 followed by the North section with 145,600, and the South with 120,200. The August, 1964 travel exceeded August of last year by nearly 50,000 visits. For the calendar year to date 1,549,200 visits have been recorded as compared with 1,458,600 at this time last year or an increase of 6.2 per cent. The percentage increase for August was 13.3 per cent. Mr. Hoskins reported that while it is too early to predict fall color activity, there are signs of the approaching season when thousands will travel to Shenandoah to view the magnificent variety of Autumn splendor in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
