Established in 1936, with only a packing plant where apples were sized by dimension, it was the most modern plant in the east, according to L. J. Kilby, manager of the cold storage and sales. In 1940 the cold storage was added. Prior to that time apples were trucked to Wincehster or Richmond to be stored. In 1946 the size of the storage was doubled. With the addition last year of a 70 by 90 foot packing plant and new equipment, apples are now sized by weight instead of dimension and packed according to size. Approximately 1000 bushels of apples are packed per day with top capacity of 1500 bushels. Migrant laborers arrive from the south to harvest the fruit which is picked and put in bulk bins holding 20 bushels This is taken by wagon or truck to the plant where the apples begin their journey through washers, brushes, graders, sorters and packers. Major varieties of apples grown here are York Imperials, Red and Golden Delicious, Stayman, Winesaps, with a few Bonums, Rambos, Lawreys, McIntosh, and Grimes Golden also grown.
Apples are sold in quantities from a bushel to a trailer load.
