Dogwood Suffers from
Heat, Drought
Don’t panic if the leaves on your dogwood trees curl and turn red or reddish purple. It may be only a passing symptom of too much heat and drought. Dr. R. H. Gruenhagen, plant pathologist at VPI, reports that many such sprigs of dogwood leaves have been sent to the plant disease clinic this summer. Dogwood is quite susceptible to heat and drought injury. When it is hot and dry dogwood leaves fold upward at the mid rib and curl downward at the tip. The tree then seems to suffer from defoliation, although only a few leaves may be lost. The leaves usually turn red or reddish-purple. Unless injury has been severe the tree usually returns to normal when cool weather comes and plenty of moisture is available. However, if heat and drought have continued too long, you can expect severe die-back of the top. To prevent die-back, keep the trees well mulched and watered, particularly during hot, dry weather. If the plant looks poor, you might prune back some of the top.
