Hunting Accidents
Up; 7 Fatalities
So far 35 hunting accidents have marred the 1964-65 hunting season, seven of them proving fatal, with as much as eight weeks of hunting yet to come in some sections of the state, according to James N. Kerrick, Virginia Game Commission Safety Officer. Both accidents and fatalities are ahead of last year's record at this time, Kerrick said. Oeer hunting accidents claimed 11 victims while 10 met with misfortune while hunting squirrels. Other accidents occurred while the victims were hunting doves, rabbits, turkeys, crows, quail, coons and blackbirds. Almost three-fourths of the accidents were caused by shotguns, onefifth by rifles and the remainder by hand guns. Over half of the accidents occurred at ranges at less than 10 yards with various examples of careless gun handling leading the list of causes. Of the 35 victims, 8 were reported to have been mistaken for game. Nearly half of the shooters and over one-third of the victims of these accidents were less than 21 years old. In two cases this year, one of them a fatality, the shooter was never identified. In the non-fatal case, the shooter ran when he heard the victim call for help and, in the other, the man was found dead in the woods. i
Christmas Play at Five Fork* Baptist Church
There will be a Christmas play entitled: 'Christmas in Our Home,* at the Five Forks Baptist Church, December 24 at 8 p.m. The play will be presented by The Five Forks Youth' Group.
