Old Log House
Being Restored
Wm A. Brockwell started restoration this week on what lqcally is considered one of the oldest log houses in the Town of Washington. It is located on Lot #7 on Main Street and is known as the Scroggins House according to the tradition it is one of the five log houses standing when George Washington surveyed in 174$. Clerk's office records show that it was owned by Lewis Fossett in 1836 and that the value of the building was $20Q value of the lot and building was $215, yearly rent was $30 and the amount of the tax was .60 per year, (the newly formed Historical Society should take it back from here through the Culpeper and Orange County records.) Hand hewn logs, chinked with rocks and splintered shavings from the logs were daubed with mud for the original construction and were immediately under the exterior weather board, when it was removed.
