partment. This supplemental levy, prior to October 30, was 2.8 cents per pound. The two recent actions by the Commission raised the levy to 4.0 cents on October 30 and 5.7 cents per pound effective November 16. This raised the total West German charges on imports of U. S. broilers from 12.9 cents to 15.7 cents per pound. The basis for the Commission’s actions was that Danish offer prices for broilers were abnormally low. The Commission used these prices to justify imposing additional charges in order to protect the Community market.
This government has protested these recent levy increases and Informed the Commission of our concern. We have urged them to take action similar to that effected earlier this year on imports of shell eggs. That action increased the supplemental levy for shell egg imports from seven countries, mostly Communist or statetrading countries, whose offering prices were consistently below the gate price. At the same time, it reduced to zero the supplemental levy from other “reasonable" trading countries, i.e. countries selling at prices equal to or above the gate price. Further representations are presently being formulated.
