The Roman Catholic custom of saying midnight mass on Christmas Eve stems from the belief that Jesus Christ was actually born at that hour. Actually, mass may be said at any hour the night before Christmas and in some countries there is no midnight mass, the first Christmas mass being said at four or five in the morning. *
