consider the 1964 percent calf crop of your cow herd that were ready to sell in mid October which weighed 442 pounds. During calf sale inspections we always see far too many calves of 250-325 lb. weight range not to mention sleek fat cows with no calves at all at side. If a commercial cow misses calving or loses her calf but one year how long thereafter would she have to stay in the herd for you to break even. It is not uncommon to hear $100.00 quoted as the annual cost of a cow. What is your cost per cow in; feed, labor, interest on investment, depreciation in fences and buildings, taxes, vet services etc?
The Madison yearling sale, held at Culpeper Enterprise^ was among the higher priced sales of this age feeder cattle in 1964. The average price per hundredweight was $20.43 on 1576 head which was the largest sale in the state. Prices were well above any other yearling sale held in this section of the state to which our producers would normally consign.
