Ceremonies were held at Skyland on July 18, 1931, signifying the start of construction of the Skyline Drive through the Park’s Central District, between Thornton Gap near Luray, and Swift Run Gap near Elkton. Construction of this scenic drive had been recommended by the Southern Applac hian National Park Commission in their report to the Secretary of the Interior, in which they recommended the Blue Ridge Mountains as the site for Shenandoah National Park.
Construction was started on the Drive about four and a half years before the Park was formally established on Dec. 26, 1935. Funds to begin work were secured by the Chairman of the Virginia State Conser vation and Development Com mission from the Federal Drought Relief Appropriation Thus, construction got off to an early start.
