The thirty-four mile central portion of the Drive was open ed to travel on Sept. 15, 1934 The thirty-two mile section between Front Royal and Thornton Gap was opened on Oct. 1, 1936, and the southern section between Swift Run Gap and Rockfish Gap was completed August 29, 1939. One exhibit, now planned for the new Visitor Center at Big Meadows, contains the 'first shovel to break ground at the ceremonies indicating the ^tart of construction of the Skyline Drive. Many other arti facts and relics have been donated, for study and exhibit purposes, to the Park’s grow ing collection of museum spec imens. So far this year, there has been a 6.7% ir\crease over 1964 in the number of visitors enjoy ing the Park’s facilities and the scenic Skyline Drive along the crest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
