In further support of the fact that George Washington, with the assistance of John Lonem and Edward Corder as chairmen, surveyed and platted the Town of Washington, Virginia on Monday the 24th day of July 1749, there is now preserved a plan of the town that was found in 1847 among the records of the Fairfax surveys and grants which purports to be, andfrom every appearance is the original as made by George Washington. This plan which is in fairly good state of preservation, contains not only the original bdundaries, but the lot numbers are easily discerned and the names of the streets are clearly legible; Skipping the next paragraph on page 10 we continue to qupte, “Going back to the Barnes survey completed and platted on July 22, 1749, the readers attention is also directed to an entry made by Washington in his Cash Book, on the 25th day of July, 1749 acknowledg ing the receipt of two pounds and three shillings as payment for this survey. This is particularly significant as the da layed payment of several days is consistent with the facts herein disclosed and accounted for by reason of Washington's absence from Fairfax now Culpeper, while survey.
