Fire Closure Lifted

Governor Harrison announced that as of approximately noon December 16, closure imposed on Eastern Virginia December 7 would be lifted, allowing all hunting, fishing and other outdoor activity in this section to resume, according to Chester F. Phelps, Executive Director of the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, This was a marginal decision, according to Governor Harrison, based on a low incidence of fires during the past few days because of light rains and higher humidity over most of this area. If high winds, excessively low humidity or an increase in the number of fires occur, the ban may again be put into effect. Therefore, hunters must use the utmost caution with fire while afield if they expect to continue hunting. Big Game seasons interrupted by the closure will be automatically extended by the number of hunting days lost. A few small seasons orginally scheduled to close before JanuJ-ary
31 might also be extended. | The law prohibits an extension beyond Janurary 31, so some hunting days have been irretrievably lost from seasons which extend to this date or beyond. Waterfowl seasons cannot be extended due tofederal restrictions.
