through tension, which is a precarious balance. To shy from it, is to remain undeveloped, and to try to do it alone is to fail to understand the magnitude of the task. The unwelcome message of Christ mas is that if God spared not his only Son to this inevitable development process of becoming a mature man in this world, how can we ask to be spared from it. It is not done for punishment, but is done for Love. Since God so loved the World, the World must face the reality of both the requirement to develop, and the pattern and strength to accomplish it, through Him who loves us. Something in each of us will rejoice if we can say, as Robert Browning expresses it: Was it for mere fool’s-play, make-believe or mumming,. So we battled it like men, not boylike sulked or whined?
