Pecans, one of our more popular holiday nuts, were, also a favorite of George Washington. According to his fellow officers, Washington often carried pecans in his pockets, and his diary reports that in 1774 he planted pecans about his home at Mount Vernon. Thomas Jefferson, too, was interested in pecans. He received the first recorded ship ment of pecans from Louisiana to the north in 1799.
