The guidebook loaned us by the guard , says that the women were washing clothes. I had not heard this or thought of it, but after knowing something of the East it seems very likely. The river crosses the road and is bridged. On the upper side it was small, weeds and reeds choked the river and cows.were grazing. On the lower side it was damned up which made it deep, still and quiet. It was treelined and reminded me of “He leadeth me beside the still waters....’’ I prayed that we may not lose the inspiration of this place and this hour. In the area of Colosse and Laodicea we camped at the police station which is within the ruins of Hierapolis. (Colossians 4:13) It is on a high plateau. There are no large cities nearby so that the stars at night seem unusually bright and closer. The same is true in Ajloun. The Roman aqueducts are still in use. We were camped within feet of them and enjoyed the babble of the hot medicinal waters though we did not need to be lulled to sleep nights. We also went swimming in an old Roman bath. It is like warm dishwater which is shocking at first but later relaxing and nice. We felt like new people after 3 hours which was the limit for which we had paid. My bursitis felt much better and infected wounds healed straitway. I got up early in the morning to walk over the ruins. The Smiths had been there before. German architects were reconstructing the baths, theatre, and working in the large cemeteries. Philip, the apostle, was supposed to have been martyred here in the year 80 and later a large church was built in the town and dedicated to him. It was further, and I did not have time to see the ruins of it. The large Jewish population attracted the early Christian missionaries. The place is now called Pemakkule which means white cotton castle. Calcium cliffs are formed everywhere from the drainage of the hot mineral springs from the heights above. They look like ice or snow and the formations are similar to those found in caves. It is fantastic! We came onourway rejoicing that we had been privileged to see these places though the weather was very hot and the roads often under construction and very dusty and dirty;' We had physicallyitWefteaHh
