What if Paul had not heard or had not answered the call? The most extensive ruins are at Ephesus (Efes in Turkish). It would take a week to see it thoroughly. We wantred to climb the mountain to the prison on top. It is possible that Paul was held prisoner there. We walked to the top of one of the mountains and ruins were on every hand. Then we came down the marble street to the amphitheatre. It seated 200,000 and the stage had 3 stories. This is where Paul became embroiled with the silversmiths who made images of Diana of the Ephesians and for the space of two hours the mob shouted “Great is Diana of the Ephesians." At quite a distance as one enters the modern town of Ephesus there is an old rusty sign. A path leads through a weed-strewn way to what was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world--The Temple of Diana of the Ephesians. There are a few broken columns and a depression in the ground resembling a filled-up pond. It has a little water in it, reeds, frogs, and little wild ducks scrambled into hiding. Apparently Dians of the Ephes> ians is not important and powerful any more. Pergamum has its interesting points. Most of the Roman cities were built on hills or high places for protection. Here was located the library which had 200,000 volumes. Alexandria, Egypt, became jealous and withheld papyrus. In Pergamum they began to use sheep or goatskin called parchment (Latin-pergamen).

I walked up and was dizzy and held on to the seats nearest hand. There is an old church in the village dedicated to St. Antipas He was a Christian rrfartyr. (Rev. 2:13) It was huge and covered with white marble.
