Source of Song Among the well-loved Christmas hymns Is “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear." The words to this one were written by a Unitarian minister of Weston, Mass., named Edmund H. Sears. Time? Just about a hundred years ago, says the Book of Knowledge. One melody for this hymn was composed by a Detroit Journalist and editor; another melody was adapted from an old British folk tune by a composer better known for his long string of light-hearted operetta hits. This was Sir Arthur Sullivan, of the team of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Montague, Mrs. Quaintance and Mrs. Estes. f Hostess For Bridge Mrs. W. F. Moffett Jr. was hostess to the Washington bridge club on Thursday night at her home on Gay Street. Those playing were Mrs. R. V. Snead, Mrs. Charles Palmer, Mrs. George Davis, Jr., Mrs. W. F. Moffett, Mrs. D. D. Miller, Mrs. WadeH.Massie, Mrs. L. J. Turner, Mrs. T. C. Lea, Mrs. Harry L. Smith, Mrs. Gene Wood, Mrs. M. B. Quaintance, and Mrs. Henry M. Keyser. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Quaintance, Mrs, Keyser and Mrs. Miller. He Invented Toys Sir Isaac Newton, English phycist, mathematician, philosopher greeted his first Christmas, and his first day, in Lincolnshire, England, in 1642. Frail and sickly as a youth, he devoted many boyhood Decembers to inventing and making Christmas toys.
