Winchester, Va. — Warmer weather and recent rains have substantiated the promise of apple blossoms for the 39th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival here on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory spokesmen today indicated optimism about the probability of bloom on the area’s thousands of apple trees. This city is now taking on the air of a festive occasion, as the “Apple Capital* awaits the influx of visitors. The windows of stores and other business places in the down town section are being decorated, the pink, green and white banners symbolic of the springtime fete are going up and telephones at Apple Blossom Festival headquarters in the George Washington hotel building jangle from early morning until past midnight. The Queen-elect, Miss Jane Henderson, a blonde beauty from the south of England, near the Winchester forwhich this city is named, will arrive here Wednesday noon. Also arriving on pre-Festival day will be the 32 college and university Apple Blossom princesses from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, as well as Miss Tambi Garret. Buffalo, N. Y., recording personality and entertainer, who will be Marshal of the Firemen’s parade, Thursday, 6 p.m., DST. Miss Henderson will be crowned Queen of the Apple Blossom Kingdom on Thursday. at 2:30 p.m., DST, at the Handley High School Bowl. Virginia's Gov. Mills E. Godwin, Jr., will come from Richmond to place the crown on the English girl's head. Her official escort in the Coronation ceremony will be U. S. Senator Harry F. Byrd.
