Veterans Hews

Millions of unclaimed medals earned by World War II and'Korean servicemen are stacked up in warehouses around the country. According to officials of the Defense Department, they aren't particularly concerned about it; but they are surprised at the apparent lack of interest in claiming awards. The Army alone reports it has some 800,000 pounds of medals stuffed in a Philadelphia warehouse. Among them are more than 1 1/2 million Victory Medals, a decoration earned by almost everyone who served in World War II. Armed forces officials are in hopes interest will pick up as World War II and Korean veterans get older and their children start asking, “What medals did you earn, Dad?" They believe fatherly pride will then prompt them to ask for their medals. All that is necessary for a veteran to obtain the medals to which he is entitled is to send a brief letter to the branch of service in which he served. The letter should contain full particulars about the individual’s military service including rank, serial number, dates of active duty, units to which assigned, dates of assignment and any other information that might be helpful in identifying the applicant. For the benefit of anyone who might want to get his medals at this time, it is suggested that th£y contact the nearest office or representsTSMiTAS
