whiteness. Wash light colored cottons and linens in water about 120 degrees; wash and wear fabrics in 90 degrees, and washable woolens in cool;r water., about 80 degrees. Woolens are best washed by the soak method; or if the machine has a gentle wash cycle, agitate only one to three minutes to prevent shrinking. Mrs. Ocie O’Brien, Home Economist at V. P. I. says, “Authorities have changed their thinking about soaking clothes. Research shows that Long soaking does not get clothes clean. The warm or hot water opens the fabric mesh so the sudsy water can circulate to loosen soil clinging to 1 the garment. After water cools however, fibers tighten and dirt is redeposited.” So her advice is to use a short washing period. Lightly soiled fabrics are clean in two or three minutes, and ten to fifteen minutes is adequate for removing heavy soil. If laundry is not clean by that time, a second washing in fresh water and detergent is suggested.,. v., - j
