Certain survivors of servicemen who die while on active duty with the Armed Forces of the United States, or within 120 days following separation, are eligible for death gratuity payments.
The amount of death gratuity is computed at six times the serviceman’s monthly basic pay. To this is added any monthly special pay, incentive pay, etc., to which the serviceman might have been entitled. This includes the extra amount paid when a person is serving in combat areas, otherwise known as hazardous duty pay. Allotments are not included in paying the death gratuity.
