Home health services (nurs ing care in patient’s homes) now are available to about three-fourths of Virginia’s population, the State Depart ment of Health’s Division of Local Health Services reported today. But contrary to some expecta tions, the Director of the Division of Local Health Services, Dr. R. W. Jessee, said Medicare patients comprised only a little more than half of the total receiving care in the first three months of the program in those areas covered by the division. The division's 29 health districts that are qualified to render home nursing services reported approximately 5,400 visits to 705 patients from July through September, Dr. Jessee said. Of these patients 383 were in the Medicare classification — 54.3 percent The 322 non-Medicare patients were persons under 65 - not entitled to participation under the new federal health insurance provisions -- who are charged directly for services rendered.
Under the progrm, patients can be accepted for home nursing care only on referral by a physician.
Dr. Jessee said the proportion of Medicare cases had run as high as 61.7 per cent at the outset of the program, but declined thereafter.
