* Like man's best friend, pigs have been faithful servants and good companions since the Stone Age. The popular image of a hog wallowing in mud, grunting at the trough, and snoring in the sun does it less than justice. Besides being superbly effi cient meat factories, the versa tile animals have snuffled truf fles, flushed game, helped win the West, paid off countless mortgages, and even entertained royalty. When Louis XI was down in the dumps, nothing could cheer him up faster than a troupe of gaily garbed little French pigs dancing to bagpipe music (That was nearly five centures before Walt Disney.) Miniature Pigs The latest porcine contribu tion to human welfare is a pig bred solely for medical research, the National Geo graphic Society says. The pig resembles man in anatomical structure, physiological processes, and biochemistry, but conventional breeds are too large for laboratories. The miniature and all other domestic species are descend ed from wild pigs that roamed from Europe to eastern Asia in prehistoric times. By the time of the New Stone Age, man had domesticated
