Contract salaries for instruc tional personnel in Virginia’s public schools averaged $486 more during the current school year than in 1965-66, a report by the State Department of Education said today. The report, which was prepared by the agency’s Division of Educational Research said that the average contract salaries of instructional personnel— classroom teachers, principals, assistant princi.— pals, directors of instruction, supervisors of instruction, li brarians, visiting teachers and special education teachers-- increased from $5,894 in 1965-66 to $6,380 in 196667, a gain of 8.2 percent. Charles E. Clear, director of educational research for the Department, pointed out that the report was based on salary contracts for instructional per sonnel on October 15,1966, and i emphasized that the averages ; may vary from salaries actual I ly paid. “For example," he
[added, “some individuals may !leave during the school year Sand be replaced by persons on a different salary level because of differences in quali ifications and experience." ] Figures for the average i salaries actually paid for ! teaching and other instruc tional positions will not be 1 available until after the end of the current fiscal year, June 30.
The report showed that secondary school principals had the greatest percent of gain in contract salaries which ranged from $b,o04 in 19o506 to $10,037 in 1966-07--an increase of 10.8 percent. On the other hand, elemen tary school librarians had the smallest increase for the same period. The average con tract salaries of elementary school librarians increased from $0,107 to $0,483 a gair of $370 (0.1 percent).
