Soil Samples submitted by Rappahannock during the past twelve months dropped from a total of 401 to 342.
This drop might partially be accounted for by a change in accounting from the calendar year to the fiscal year, however, analysis of soil samples representative of the field to be fertilized and/or limed is just as valuable a tool as ever in economic crop production. A total of 76,343 samples were tested by the Va. Tech laboratory during the July 1, 1966 - June 30, 1967 period as compared to 73,373 during the January 1, 1966 - January 1, 1967 period.
Soil Conservation Service Ei> gineers of the Charlottesville office have completed studies and computations of the proposed Beech Spring watershed development project and are ready to report.
This study was made at the request of certain citizens concerned over the water shortage in recent years. The impoundment structure has been planned to fulfill two purposes; flood control and water supply for the Sperryville community. Subsequently a public hearing is expected to be called at which time procedures will be outlined relative to steps necessary in having the watershed project become a reality.
Seal-Vac Silage Stack - There seems to be widespread interest in the new Seal-Vac vacuum silage system. It employes a vacuum-compression technique applied to grass, corn, sorghum, and other forage crops. The Seal-Vac kit is manufactured by the Gering Plastics Company, Kenilworth, N. j J, Farm service stores throughout the state operated by Southern States Cooperative, Inc., Richmond, are the dealers for the kits. These stores should have informational literature on the system and prices for the different sizes; 100, 200, and 500 ton capacities. Each kit includes the plastic sheets for the bottom and the j cover, the tubes for sealing! around the edges, and the tube! for connecting to a vacuum pump. The unit price will include these items. A milking machine vacuum pump is recommended for evacuating the air from the silage. For normal evacuation. pump to about 15 to
20 inches of mercury. A liquid manure spreader tank equipped with a vacuum pump may also be used. The plastic sheets will be good for only one year. The
