Any plant that produces up to 2 1/2 pounds of seeds and 200 feet of roots has a ‘built -in” ability to perpetuate itself. I don’t know how many seeds there are in a pound of Johnson grass seed, but 200 feet of rhizomes could result in 1200 plants' V. P.I. is conducting corn breeding research in areas where Maize Dwarf Mosiac is known to exist in developing additional corn hybrids resistant to, or tolerant of this virus disease, of which Johnson grass is winter host. Resistant hybrids are: PAG SX17 & 19, SS 866. Extremely susceptible varieties: Crib Filler 66, DeKalb SL-362 and DeKalb 805 A. (Hybrids Eval uated Under Virus Conditions, Kentucky ‘66). Virginia Tech research resulted in the following hybrids being recommened for planting this spring for resistance to Maize Dwarf Mosiac: PAG ,SX 19and Pioneer 511. Drought conditions made a very severe test with only a few hybrids having sufficient tolerance to Maize Dwarf Mosiac and drought to approach economic corn yields. The Research is continuing.
