Stuart Wells, Jr.

Stuart Wells, Jr., of Wayzata Minnesota, died of a heart attack December 17, while hunting with the Rappahannock Hunt. Mr. Wells was 58 years of age and a graduate of Amherst College. In the spring of 1967 he was elected Presi-j dent of the Dayton Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he being the only person in the history of the organization who had been bestowed this honor other than a member of the Dayton family. Mr. Wells was a nationally recognized merchandising executive and was well known in the field of fashion in America. He was recognized by other organizations for his many accomplishments, among them being his introduction of John Stephen of Carnaby Street to the Midwest and his arranging for the personal appearance at the Dayton Company of Twiggy, this being the only American appearance other than New York. Mr. Wells was also the founder of the Stuart Wells Day Camp in Minneapolis. In Minnesota, Mr. Wells was a member and Joint Master of the Long Lake hounds. He began hunting in Virginia ten years ago and in 1962 he and his wife, Mary, built a lovely weekend home, “Turkey Hill”, near Sperryville. Mr. Wells is survived by his wife, the former Mary Cushman of Chicago, two sons, Patrick and Stuart, and two grandchildren.
