SMSgt. Brown Instructs Flight Theory in Saigon
Saigon - Flying an aircraft involves more than just starting the engine, taking off and eventually landing. The pilot has to know his route, weather conditions, rate of fuel consumption and the uses of many nstruments. ' SMSgt. Maury W. Brown, Jr. of Sperryville has been teaching the principles of flyiqg luring ground training classes held nightly at Tan Son Nhut AB. The only class of its kind in Vietnam, it covers all ground training required for private, commercial and instrumental ratings in addition to fundamentals of navigation, weather and radio operation. No actual flying lessons are given, according to Brown who has been a flyer for 18 years, but these students can pass Federal Aviation Agency ground tests then concentrate solely on flying upon their return to the States. Brown has been instructing about 75 students a week since April. Each course lasts six weeks.
