The polluted Thornton River was a major topic at the Febru ary meeting of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors held on the 2nd. A. H. Paessler and J. H. Roadcap, Jr. of the State Water Control Board were present to discuss the problem andpossfr ble solution with the county legislators. The Thornton River, as it flows through the village of Sperryville, receives raw sew age piped directly into the stream from over 20 homes. This accompanied by refuse which includes everything from cabbage leaves to glass bottles and tin cans, has the river in deplorable condition. Homes built on the river’s edge have no private sewage systems for the soil of the flood plain is not conducive to receiving septic tanks and drain fields. By the same token, a supply of pure water from wells is questionable. The problem is great, though it affects only a few, and there fore will be more difficult to correct. The State Water Control Law stipulates that any land owner who causes pollution of state waters is under compulsion by law to make amends. The problem has been present for many years, and attention and correction are long overdue.
