New design and safety features and higher costs for construction and right-of-way have led to a 15 per cent increase in the estimated cost of building the interstate high way system in Virginia, the Department of Highways said today. The Department’s forecast, submitted to the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads for inclusion in an updated national cost estimate for Congress, set ! the State’s total interstate costs at $1,671,616,000, The last previous estimate, in 1965 was $1,452*462,000. On a nation-wide basis, federal highway authorities have reported that the cost of completing the full 41,000-mile interstate system from coast to coast will be at least 20 per cent more than in the 1965 I forecast, and will total an estimated $56,5 billion.
