Crashes Reported
A snow squall Friday night which began suddenly, covered the ground then ceased as quickly as it started, stalled numerous motorists on Route 211 on both sides of the mountain. In the early morning hours Saturday, two minor skidding crashes occurred. At 2:30 a.m. on Route 522 less than a mile east of Sperryville, Ernest Lenwood Eubank of Sperryville, operating a 67 Chevrolet skidded on the icy road and struck a bank. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $150. No charges were made by Trooper J. B. Willis who investigated. Trooper W. A. Buntin was called to a minor incident on the mountain which involved an out-of-state car. No injury resulted and no charges were made. A two-vehicle collision occurred Saturday afternoon on Route 652 two miles south of Sperryville. James B. Perkins operating a 62 Ford convertible and Susan Haggerty operating a 64 Chevrolet Corvair collided when they met on a curve on the narrow gravel road. The Corvair was owned by Mrs. Alice C. Sullivan. All parties involved are of Sperryville. There were no charges and no injuries, according to Trooper Willis. Damage to the Perkins car was set at $400 and to the Sullivan vehicle at $300.
