Col. McNear Retires
After 31 Yrs. Service
Colonel Evan A. McNear of Washington, Va. has retired from the (J. S. Army after 31 years of service. On January 31, he concluded his military career when he retired as post commander at Vint Hill Farms Station near Warrenton. He was presented the Legion of Merit for his outstanding service, and a certificate of appreciation. Colonel McNear was born in Harrisburg, Pa. on November 12, 1912. Here he was reared and educated, then entered the University of Maryland. November 26, 1936 he was commissioned a second lieutenant, Infantry, entering active duty in February 1942 and serving as recruiting officer in the Washington, D. C. j area. He served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during the latter part of World War II. He returned to the States in '46 and later that same year was assigned to the Philippines, then reassigned to Okinawa. In 1949 he again returned tojhe U. S. to spend about four years before being assigned to the European Theatre. This three-year tour of duty took him to Austria and Germany then back to the states.
