1967 Arrest Figures
Richmond, Va. . . . Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, announced today that the Department made 210,872 arrests during 1967, to top the 199,750 or 1966. Of these, Colonel Burgess said 96 percent, or 203,512, involved the highway and 199,214 were for traffic violations. As examples of highway offenses not considered traffic violations, he gave littering, intoxicated afoot and improper license plates. The conviction rate was 92 percent.
Fines and assessments from all arrests, plus the value of recovered stolen property, represented a total of $9,197,270.86. Colonel Burgess noted that while commercial vehicle travel represents approximately 20 percent of all road travel, arrests against drivers of commercial vehicles totaled 46,592, or 23 percent of all highway arrests. Of these arrests, 34,819, or 74 percent, were for moving hazardous violations. As of January 1, 1967, he said, authorized uniformed strength for the Department was 847. On July 1, 1967, this was increased to 898. During the year, the Department operated with an average of 806 available men.
