This week many people in Rappahannock will receive a letter inviting them to join the “Friends of the Library*. This is the formal establishment of the group which will help support the library, participate in its various projects and activities, and promote the aims of a free library in Flappa hannock.
In the past six years a small group of dedicated volunteers assisted by some substantial Foundation contributions, has done an excellent job of setting up a working library service to the community.
The old Presbyterian church at Calvert and Gay streets, built in colonial style about 1850, was purchased from the Baggarly estate and restored. The conversion to a library sacrificed very little of the colonial interior, and even the pulpit and choir loft were retained. Cu ounds were improved by lowering the grade in front, installing brick steps and landscaping with boxwood donated by Interested supporters.
Over 5,000 books now grace the shelves and are ready for circulation. Among the titles are many recent “musts* on preferred reading lists. A “Virginia* shelf now contains enough works to stimulate the appetite of a researcher in Virginia history. A shelf of books covering much of the history of great wars of the world has been donated by a retired general. The Librarian keeps many of the more popular and responsible magazines on the tables for perusal by the visitor or the more serious reader. There are many good worksforchildren, and the library staff, has constantly stressed the development of a children’s library. For several years a book fair has been held annually with special emphasis on books for young people In Rappahannock, last year this fa ir wa s taken into the schools.
