Governor Mills E. Godwin, | Jr., signed a proclamation March 5 officially setting aside March 17-23 as Wild!
life Week in Virginia. “This is ! a most appropriate time for the citizens of Virginia to take stock of the richness of our wildlife and to pledge again our determination to understand and protect our natural environment," the document said.
Wildlife Week is sponsored annually in Virginia by the Virginia Wildlife Federation, an affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, in cooperation with the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries and other conservation agencies and groups. This year’s theme, “Learn to Live with Nature," stresses the importance of adequate conservation education. The Governor’s proclamation stressed that “In Virginia, we have an unequaled heritage of natural beauty, of wild animals and plant life. Man’s intimate contact with nature is as important to his spiritual needs as technological advances are to his material well being." The statement further pointed out that “For our own enjoyment and for the pleasure of generations to follow, we must attempt to preserve these treasures by making sure we do everything we can to 'Learn to Live with Nature' "
