Tree Planting Now

William C. Vernam, area forester for the Virginia Division of Forestry, reports that tree planting is now in full swing throughout the state of Virginia. Trees have already been received by,some landowners in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties for reforestation projects and more will soon be on the way. In 1967 Virginia ranked 5th among all of the states in the number of seedlings shipped from state forest tree nurseries, 6th in the total number of seedlings planted, and 4th in the number of acres planted on privately owned land. 44,031,000 were raised and shipped from Division of Forestry nurseries last year with a total of 74,920 acres of land being planted of which 70,760 acres were owned by industry and private landowners. This is a record that the people of the state of Virginia can be extremely proud of. Forester Vernam, however, feels that this record can be improved and that it will probably be exceeded during 1968 if the present demand for trees continues. According to Mr. Vernam some species of trees are completely sold out but that most of the pine species used in reforestation projects are still available at a small cost of $5.50 to $9.50 per thousand trees delivered to the landowner.
