The noise from the entire project would certainly not be helpful to the nerves of the people. The method of blasting, some have said, would be different from that used in previous years. Blasting is blasting. It is therefore difficult for me to believe the effects would not be detrimental to our homes, our health ind the predominant agricultural character of the neighborhood. The quarry's proximity to the Town 6f Washington would certainly be injurious to property or improvements in the neighborhood.
It is my understanding that the highway to New Market will not be completed until 1975, if then. Completion of the highway construction would not necessarily mean the closing of the quarry, since Mr. Cumby made the statement to the Board of Zoning Appeals that there is enough rock on the porposed site to last a hundred years. Think that through When the rock crusher was operating on this site in previous years the blasting jarred my home two miles away. I lived through those years and I hate to think of having to live through worse years now, for I'm within very close range of the proposed quarry. We have to put up with the annoy ances occasioned by construction of the highway, and we do so willingly, as this is for our safety and convenience, but why should we have to put up with another quarry when there is one at Flint Kill with equally suitable stone? One quarry inourCoun ty is enough. Rappahannock County is beautiful and attracts people who wish to live in a beautiful, peaceful community. In my opinion our Board of Zoning Appeals was right in refusing to grant permission to open up this quarry. This is an historic area, and one of the purposes of our zoning laws is to protect against destruction or encroachment upon historic areas.
