In Full Swing
With the spawning season at hand, the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries’ muskellunge and northern pike production is in full §wing, reports Fish Division Chief Jack Hoffman. Fifty adult northerns from the Commission’s King and Queen Hatchery were placed in the 32 acre spawning pond on the Elm Hill Wildlife Management Area and are believed to have spawned. An additional half million pike fry obtained from Nebraska were placed In the pond in early April. The fish will be allowed to grow until they reach 9 to 11 inch size before release.
In addition to a substantial number tb be released into Gaston Lake, a significantpor tion of this year’s pike production will be used for experimental stocking in several eastern Virginia lakes. This will mark the third year that fingerling northerns have been released in Gaston. Those from the 1966 release are expected to reach the legal 26 inch length this summer. One
