More than 175,000 children will benefit from recent changes in the Social Security law. It is no longer necessary to prove that a child is dependent on his mother before monthly benefits can be paid to the child. Dependency of a child under the old law could be established only by the mother having worked at least l'/2 years in the 3 year period (currently insured) before the mother died or retired, or became disabled. If she failed to meet the “currently insured” requirement, she must have been contributing at least '/»the child’s support, which was difficult to prove in many cases.
Now, under the new law the “currently insured” requirement has been eliminated. A child is now considered dependent on his mother in the same way as he has always been considered dependent on his father. Proof of the child's dependency will no longer be requiredunless the child was adopted by someone else.
Individuals whose claims have been disallowed for failure to establish dependency of the child on his mother, should contact the Social Security office to see if they now qualify under the new law. The district office is located at 20 S. Cameron St. in Winchester, Va.
