Security Act. The records show that never, during the last two decades, has Congress failed to
take such action in a presidential j election year. The average payment per recipient, locally, is now $751 per] year, a big jump over the $560 j they collected five years ago.
The increase, 34 percent, compares with a rise of 26 percent in the United States and with 28 percent in the South Atlantic States.
What with more beneficiaries and bigger checks, total payments in the local area have zoomed to $663,000 a year, as against the 1963 total of $404,000.
Nationally, more than $2 billion is being pumped back into the economy each month through these pension payments. Nearly 24 million men, women and children are now on the receiving end, or about one out of every eight in the population.
