As schools began to open, John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, asked motorists to be alert when children are going to and from schools and at all times in the vicinity of schools.
Calling attention to the law requiring stops for halted school buses, he stressed the fact that it applies regardless of whether the road is a 4-lane and divided or 2-lane, motorists are required to come to a full stop when approaching from any angle and remain stopped until the bus is again in motion and the road clear of children. Failing to do so is legally reckless driving.
Too often, he continued, the excuse is given that the driver came up behind a long string of cars and did not see the bus. Under such conditions, the motorist should realize that a line of halted cars means an emergency and that he is not justified in rushing past them.
