Rappahannock County High School Panthers, favored to take the 1968-69 Group II District 10 championship, walked away with victories in their first two games this past week. Wednesday the Rappahannock five outlasted Elkton 68-63 and topped the Strasburg Rams 6262 in their first home game on Tuesday.
Wednesday the Panthers sent the Elks of Elkton down to its 19th straight defeat with a 68-63 win. Wayne Deal led the Panther attack with 21 points, playing an outstanding defensive game. Bobby Settle added 18 points for the victors and Charlie Dodson had 13. Rex Meadows was high scorer for Elkton with 17 points.
The Panthers made it two in a row’ Tuesday stopping the Strasburg Rams 62-52 behind 20 points by Settle and 19 bv Dodson. John Deal also contributed 10. It was a tight first half but the Panthers pulled to a 26-20 half-time lead. Rappahannock then raced to a 42-28 third quarter margin, outscoring the Rams 16-8 in that period. From then on. Rappahannock was in complete command.
