Divided Highways
Increase in State
Motorists in Virginia in 1969 will have 145 miles more of divided highways than they had this summer and fall, according to a report by the State Highway Department. The total includes 102 miles of arterial highways, 13 miles of non-arteria! dividing, and 30 miles of new interstate segments which have just been opened or are expected to be opened shortly. Hie arterial work will cost around $35 million. Hie cost of the completed and under construction arterial projects since the program began in 1964 has been $168,645,000. Hie completions will bring to around 700 the number of miles now divided, out of the 1,738-mile network authorized by the 1964 General Assembly, ivhich, with the 1966 Legislature, arovided additional funds to accelerate the road construction arogram. Some 372 miles of this otal were divided when the irogram began. This pace must be continued if lie remaining nearly 900 miles ire to be divided by the 1975 arget date set by the General Assembly.
