“Neither size, shape, color nor actions are sufficient for positive identification of legal turkeys in the fall,” says Shaffer. “Young gobblers may show the proper coloring and shape but lack a beard, and an old hen may look like the biggest bird in the woods when seen all alone. Hie beard is the only way to identify a legal target,” he said. Even bearded birds are often viewed by the hunter from angles at which the beards cannot be seen. Flying birds will be nearly impossible to identify on the wing.
Shaffer recommends flushing the flock without shooting and then calling them back from a concealed position where the hunter will have time to study the approaching birds for evidence of beards. The old saying “it’s better to be safe than sorry” is the best advice for turkey enthusiasts in Eastern Virginia this fall.
