Thistle Control

BLACKSBURG-The best way to control curled and musk thistle is to stop it before it starts, says Dr. Harlan White, Virginia Tech Extension agronomist. “It is much more efficient to maintain vigorous, productive pastures so that they are able to resist invasion by the thistle than to have to fight to rid yourself of the weeds after they get a foothold, he said. Fertilization of pastures this winter will help keep bare areas, where thistle can easily germinate, knitted together tightly with sod. This will keep thistles and other weeds out and at the same time increase the feed available from the pasture he said. Soil should be tested and pastures fertilized accordingly this winter and early spring.
Over-grazing and trampling to the point where pasture plants are inured also leave open areas in the sod which invite weed invasion and decreased production, Dr. White added.
