Point-to-Point Races

At 12:30, Saturday, March 1, the starting flag will trigger off the twentieth running of the popular Rappahannock Point-to-Point Races. The course, on the east side of Route 522, 2 miles south of Sperryville, located on James W. Fletcher’s Thornton Hill Farm, is known as one of the sportiest courses of the Virginia Point-to-Point Circuit. The ups and downs of its rolling, mountainside terrain give a real challenge to steeplechasers horse and man (or woman) starting their racing season.
Interest is running high in Rappahannock Hunt’s feature race, the Ben Venue, for gentlemen owner-riders, (who are members of recognized hunts.) The points accrued in this race count toward the determination of the best-owner-rider of the 1969 Virginia Point-to-Point Circuit, to be awarded the Seven Corners Shopping Center Bowl.
The first race for this Virginia competition is scheduled, February 22, by the Casanova Hunt. Following Rappahannock’s March 1 Ben Venue Race, the competition will be offered each successive Saturday in the Point-to-Points of Blue Ridge Hunt, Warrenton Hunt, Piedmont Hunt, Potomac Hunt, Orange County Hunt, Howard County Hunt, and Oatlands Point-to-Point.
Snow, wind and cold are plaguing race preparations. Owners are hard up to it to condition their horses; however, they are a tough and optimisticlot, so entries are coming in as usual. For the convenience of those entering the races, the Rappahannock course will be open for schooling, starting Friday, February 21, through Friday, February 28. General admittance is $1.50 per person. Cars may be parked across 522, $1.00 per car.
