This is the beginning of out se grind week in the West. Here in Colorado, the summer is brief, days are hot, and nights are cool.
We enjoyed the last 7 days of sightseeing at a fast-moving pace and now we welcomed a few days’ rest.
On a sunny, warm Saturday morning, after busily making preparations for the big event on the Academy grounds, the entire family hopped into the camper for the opening of the fourth lake on the Academy. The 7-acre lake, stocked for fishing, was constructed under the supervision of Maury, Jr. As President of the Sportsman Club, he arranged the event for the benefit of a group of underprivileged children and for veterans from the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. Approximately 150 people enjoyed the fellowship together and the lunch prepared and served by members of the Sportsman Club and their families.
By 4 in the afternoon the family again piled into the handsomely packed camper and motored through Raton Pass into New Mexico. The simple act of taking a walk was an enjoyable experience in the town of Cimarron, where we obtained lodging for the night.
